Desk Questions, Answered
Quick answers on desk height, size, standing desks, materials and layout before you choose.
What is the standard height of a desk?
About 28–30 in, with 29–30 in the most common. The right height for you puts the keyboard at about seated elbow height, with your elbows bent near 90 degrees. If a desk is too high, raise your chair and add a footrest. More in standard desk height.
What size desk do I need?
About 40–48 in wide for a laptop. For computer work, ergonomic guidelines suggest at least about 46 in wide (60 in or more recommended) and 30 in or more deep, so the monitor sits about an arm's length away. Executive and dual-monitor setups often use 70–90 in.
How high should a standing desk be?
At about standing elbow height, so your elbows bend at 90 degrees and your wrists stay straight, roughly 38–46 in for many adults. Our Height Adjustable Standing Desk adjusts from 29.6 to 44.9 in and saves four heights. See standing desk height.
How often should I switch between sitting and standing?
Change position often rather than standing all day. A widely cited pattern from Cornell University is about 20 minutes sitting, 8 minutes standing and 2 minutes moving every half hour. Start with short standing periods and use an anti-fatigue mat.
Is a solid wood desk better than MDF?
Solid wood is stronger, lasts longer and can be refinished, but it's heavier and costs more. Veneer over a stable core gives a real wood surface with less movement. MDF is smooth and affordable but swells if wet and can't be refinished. Full comparison: solid wood desk guide.
Where should I put my desk in a home office?
Ideally where you can see the door, with windows to your side to cut screen glare, and with a bookshelf or clean wall behind you for video calls. Leave at least about 36 in behind the desk for your chair. Ideas in home office layout.
Can two people share one desk?
Yes. For computer work, allow about 46–60 in of width per person. Long, deep desks of 84–90 in, like the Plank Office Desk or Oval-End Grand Desk, fit two people with laptops or one monitor each. Plan about 10 ft or more for two dual-monitor setups.
How do I care for a wood desk?
Dust with a soft cloth, wipe spills straight away and dry the surface, and use coasters and a desk pad. Avoid abrasive cleaners and silicone sprays, keep the desk out of strong direct sun, and keep it away from radiators and heating vents.
