Dining Room Furniture FAQs

What furniture do you need in a dining room?

A dining table and chairs come first, followed by a rug, a chandelier or pendant, and storage such as a sideboard, buffet, hutch or pantry cabinet for dishes and linens. Wall decor and a simple centerpiece finish the room. See how to decorate a dining room.

How much space do you need around a dining table?
  • About 36 in between the table edge and walls or furniture so chairs can pull out.
  • 42–48 in where people walk behind seated guests.
  • About 24 in of table edge per person.

Full charts in our dining table size guide.

Should I choose a round or rectangular dining table?

Choose round for square or compact rooms and groups of four to six; choose rectangular for long rooms and eight or more people. Oval tables combine rectangular seating with easier flow. Compare them in round vs rectangular dining table.

What is the best wood for a dining table?

Hardwoods such as oak, maple, walnut, cherry and hickory. Oak is the best all-rounder; maple and hickory resist dents best; walnut and cherry suit formal rooms. A quality hardwood veneer over a solid wood frame is stable and good value. Read the best wood for a dining table guide.

What is the difference between a sideboard and a buffet?

The terms are often used interchangeably. A buffet traditionally sits in the dining room and is a little taller, while a sideboard is lower and works in any room. Both store dinnerware and linens and give you a serving surface. More in sideboard vs. buffet.

How can I add storage to a dining room?

Add a sideboard or buffet along one wall, a glass-door hutch or display cabinet for dinnerware, or a freestanding pantry cabinet for dry goods, small appliances and serving pieces. Anchor tall cabinets to the wall. See our freestanding pantry cabinet guide and dining room storage ideas.
