Kitchen Island Questions, Answered
Quick answers on size, seating, outlets, lighting and storage before you choose.
What size kitchen island do I need?
Leave space to work around it: kitchen planning guidelines call for work aisles of at least 42 in for one cook and 48 in for two, and walkways of at least 36 in. Small kitchens usually suit islands about 48–62 in long; large open kitchens can take 90 in or more. See our kitchen island dimensions guide.
How much overhang do I need for island seating?
NKBA guidelines suggest about 15 in of knee space at counter height (about 36 in), 12 in at bar height (about 42 in), and 24 in of counter width per person. Our Orbis Contour Form Island has 73.4 in of open seating width on the back.
What's the difference between a freestanding and a built-in island?
A freestanding island is finished furniture you assemble and place, with no plumbing or contractor, and you can move it. A built-in is fixed to the floor and can include a sink, cooktop and hardwired outlets. More in freestanding kitchen islands.
Can a freestanding kitchen island have outlets?
Yes. Some islands have built-in outlets or USB ports that plug into a wall receptacle, like the Modern Double-Sided Island and the Dual-Level Island with Power Outlet. Plug them directly into the wall and route the cord safely so it isn't a trip hazard. Hardwired island outlets should be installed by a licensed electrician to local code. See kitchen islands with outlets.
How high should pendant lights hang over an island?
The bottom of each pendant about 30–36 in above the countertop, spaced about 24–30 in apart, with the outer pendants at least 6–12 in in from the island ends. Details in pendant lights over a kitchen island.
What should I store in a kitchen island?
Store items where you use them: prep tools and cookware on the kitchen side, dishes and linens on the seating side, and wine or glassware at the ends. Deep drawers are easiest for pots and pans. Ideas in kitchen island storage ideas.
How do I keep a freestanding island from moving?
Load heavy items low, use anti-slip pads or leveling feet on hard floors, and lock casters on rolling islands. Floor brackets give a fixed feel, but renters should ask the landlord first.
How do I care for a painted or marble-look island top?
Wipe it with a soft, damp cloth and mild soap, dry it, and avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals. Use cutting boards and trivets, and wipe up spills quickly so they don't soak into seams or edges.
