Bedroom Furniture FAQs
What furniture do you need in a bedroom?
A bed frame and mattress, at least one nightstand, and clothes storage such as a dresser, chest of drawers or wardrobe. Add bedside lighting, curtains and a rug; a mirror, bench or chair can come later. See our full bedroom furniture list.
How much space do you need around a bed?
- 24 in minimum, ideally 30–36 in, on the open sides and at the foot of the bed.
- About 36 in in front of a dresser or wardrobe so drawers and doors open.
- A queen bed fits comfortably in a room of about 10 x 10 ft; a king needs about 12 x 12 ft.
More in our bedroom layout guide.
Where is the best place to put the bed?
Against the longest solid wall, facing the door but not directly in line with it, with clear paths on both sides. Avoid blocking windows, radiators and the door swing. Read bedroom layout ideas for 10 arrangements.
How tall should a nightstand be?
About level with the top of your mattress, or within about 2 in of it, so you can reach a lamp or phone easily. Most nightstands are 24–30 in tall. See the nightstand height guide.
What is the difference between a dresser and a chest of drawers?
A dresser is low and wide, with two or more columns of drawers and a top for a mirror or decor. A chest of drawers is tall and narrow, with a single column, which saves floor space. More in dresser vs. chest of drawers.
What can I use if my bedroom has no closet?
A freestanding wardrobe or armoire, a modular closet system along one wall, or a corner wardrobe. In a spare room, wardrobes on two or three walls can create a walk-in closet. See walk-in closet ideas and bedroom with no closet ideas.
How do I make my bedroom feel cozy?
Use warm bedside lamps instead of overhead light, layer bedding and throws, add a large rug and floor-length curtains, and choose natural materials like wood, linen and wool. Our guide to how to decorate a bedroom covers it step by step.
Which bedroom furniture does Homsee offer?
