Dining Table Questions, Answered

Quick answers on size, height, chairs, rugs, lighting and care before you choose.

What size dining table do I need?

Allow about 24 in of table edge per person, and leave about 36 in between the table and walls or furniture, more where people walk behind seated guests. As a rough guide, 60–72 in long seats 6, and 84–96 in seats 8. Full guide: dining table size guide.

What is the standard dining table height?

About 28–30 in. Counter-height tables are about 34–36 in and bar-height tables about 40–42 in. Leave 10–12 in between the chair seat and the tabletop. More in standard dining table height.

What chair height goes with my table?

Subtract about 10–12 in from the table height. A 30 in table pairs with seats about 18–20 in high; our 31.1 in tables, like the Plank Dining Table, pair well with seats about 19–21 in high. Check that armrests clear the apron.

What size rug goes under a dining table?

One that extends at least 24 in beyond the table on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. A 6-seat table usually needs an 8 × 10 ft rug, and an 8-seat table a 9 × 12 ft rug. See rug under dining table.

How high should a chandelier hang over a dining table?

The bottom of the fixture should be about 30–36 in above the tabletop with an 8 ft ceiling, plus about 3 in for every additional foot of ceiling. Choose a diameter of about half to two-thirds of the table's width. Details in chandelier height over dining table.

Rectangular, oval or round dining table: which should I choose?

Rectangular tables seat the most people and suit long rooms. Oval tables seat as many but have softer corners that make walking around easier. Round tables suit small, square rooms and conversation. Rounded designs like the Oval-End Dining Table combine a long footprint with soft edges.

Is a solid wood dining table worth it?

For a table you'll use every day for years, yes. Solid wood is strong and can be refinished. Wood veneer over a stable core gives an even grain and resists warping. Several of our tables pair solid pine frames with red oak veneer tops.

How do I protect a wood dining table?

Use coasters, trivets and placemats, wipe spills right away and dry the surface, keep it out of strong direct sun and away from heating vents, and avoid silicone polishes. White water rings can often be lifted with gentle heat. More in how to protect a wood dining table.
