Living Room Furniture FAQs
What furniture do you need in a living room?
Most living rooms need a sofa or sectional, a coffee table, side tables, a rug and at least two light sources, plus a TV stand or storage piece if you watch TV. Accent chairs, display cabinets, a console table and decor can come later. See our full living room furniture list.
How do I arrange living room furniture?
- Pick a focal point, such as a fireplace, a window or the TV, and face the main seating toward it.
- Keep walkways 30–36 in wide and route them around the seating, not through it.
- Leave 14–18 in between the sofa and the coffee table.
- Use a rug big enough for at least the front legs of every seat.

What size coffee table should I get for my sofa?
Choose a coffee table about two-thirds the length of your sofa and about the same height as the seat cushion or slightly lower. Round and upholstered coffee tables are easier to walk around in small rooms. Here's how to measure a sofa first.
Where should the TV go if I have a fireplace?
Put both on the same wall, with the TV above or beside the fireplace, for one focal point. If they're on adjacent walls, use an L-shaped sofa or swivel chairs; on opposite walls, two facing sofas work best. Electric fireplaces are the easiest to combine with a TV. Read our living room layout with fireplace and TV guide.
Should living room furniture match?
Coordinate rather than match. A fully matching set can look flat; a room looks more personal when you repeat two or three colors and one or two wood tones across different pieces. Learn how to mix wood tones.
What furniture works best in a small living room?
Compact pieces with visible legs, a sofa without bulky arms, a round or upholstered coffee table, and closed storage such as a TV stand with drawers or a slim cabinet. Keep large pieces against walls only where they don't block a door, and anchor tall cabinets and bookcases to the wall.
Which living room furniture does Homsee offer?
- Sofas, including curved and channel-tufted boucle styles.
- Coffee tables in wood, leather-top and upholstered designs, many with a lower shelf.
- TV stands and entertainment centers, some with built-in electric fireplaces and bookcases.
- Electric fireplaces and mantels with adjustable flame colors and brightness.
- Display cabinets, storage cabinets and sideboards for closed and open storage.
