Coffee Table Questions, Answered
Quick answers on sizing, spacing, shapes, storage and care before you choose.
What size coffee table do I need?
A common guide is the 2/3 rule: a rectangular coffee table about two-thirds the length of your sofa. For an 84 in sofa, that's about 56 in. Round and square tables should be small enough that everyone can reach the center from their seat: about 32–36 in for smaller sofas and 40–48 in for large sectionals.
How far should a coffee table be from the sofa?
Leave 12–18 in, ideally 14–18 in. That's close enough to reach a drink and far enough to walk past. Go toward 18 in if you have young kids or open drawers often, and keep 30–36 in for walkways around the seating area.
How tall should a coffee table be?
About the same height as your sofa seat, or 1–2 in lower. Most sofa seats are 17–19 in high, so most coffee tables are 16–19 in. Ours range from 15.7 in (Upholstered Rectangular) to 19.3 in (Upholstered Round).
Should I choose a round or square coffee table?
Round suits small or square rooms, curved sofas and homes with toddlers, with no corners to bump. Square suits large sectionals and seating on all sides. Rectangular suits long sofas and narrow rooms. Compare them in round vs. square coffee tables.
Is an upholstered coffee table practical?
Yes, with the right fabric. Choose a water-resistant fabric or faux leather, use a tray for drinks, and blot spills quickly. Our upholstered tops are rated for 176 lb and double as a footrest or an occasional seat. Read our upholstered coffee table guide.
Which is better: a coffee table with drawers or an open shelf?
Drawers hide remotes, chargers and small clutter, like the four push-to-open drawers of the Orbis Sculpted Edge Coffee Table. An open shelf is easier to reach and holds baskets, books and throws. See coffee tables with storage.
How do I style a coffee table?
Start with an anchor (a tray or a stack of books), add a group of three objects of different heights, include something living like flowers or a plant, and leave about a third of the top clear. More ideas in how to style a coffee table.
How do I care for a wood coffee table?
Wipe it with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth, and dry it straight away. Use coasters and placemats, avoid abrasive cleaners and standing water, and keep it out of strong direct sun. For the Relievo Square, mild soap and water is fine for stickier spills.
