Pantry Cabinet Questions, Answered

Quick answers on sizes, depth, appliances and organizing before you choose.

What size pantry cabinet do I need?

Freestanding pantry cabinets come in two common heights: about 70–72 in, which most adults can reach without a step stool, and extra-tall 84–93 in units. Single-door cabinets are about 15–24 in wide, double-door 30–36 in, hutch-style 48–63 in, and pantry wall systems 10 ft or more. Ours are 31.5–141.7 in wide; most are 92.5 in tall. See the freestanding pantry cabinet guide.

How deep should a pantry cabinet be?

For food, 12–16 in is the most practical: cans and jars sit one or two rows deep, so nothing gets lost at the back. Choose 18–24 in if you will store small appliances, stockpots or large platters. Our pantry cabinets are 21.7 in deep; the Wood Pantry Cabinet with Mesh Doors is 15.7 in.

Will a 92.5 in pantry cabinet fit under an 8 ft ceiling?

Usually, yes. Tall cabinets are built lying down and tilted upright, so the ceiling has to clear the diagonal: about 95 in for a 92.5 in tall, 21.7 in deep cabinet, just under a standard 96 in ceiling. Measure under ceiling lights, vents and crown molding before you assemble it in place.

Can I put a microwave or coffee maker in a pantry cabinet?

Yes, on a countertop or appliance shelf with enough depth. The Pantry Cabinet with Built-In Power Outlet has three standard U.S. outlets plus a USB and a USB-C port above its counter. Plug the cabinet straight into a wall outlet, and leave the doors open while an appliance runs so the heat can escape.

What is the difference between a pantry cabinet and a kitchen hutch?

A pantry cabinet is tall, mostly closed storage for food and kitchen supplies. A kitchen hutch puts shelves or glass doors above a lower cabinet with a countertop, so it doubles as a coffee or serving station. Many freestanding pantries combine both, like our 63 in pantry cabinet with a countertop and drawers.

How do I organize a pantry cabinet?

Store by zone (breakfast, baking, snacks, canned goods, pasta and grains), keep daily items at eye level and heavy items on the lowest shelves, decant dry goods into clear airtight containers, and use risers or turntables so jars at the back stay visible. New items go behind older ones.

Is it cheaper to buy or build a pantry cabinet?

For most people, buying is cheaper and faster. A freestanding pantry cabinet costs far less than a custom built-in, needs only assembly and anchoring, and moves with you. Building makes sense mainly if you already have the tools and need an unusual size.

Do pantry cabinets need to be anchored to the wall?

Yes. Tall pantry cabinets are top-heavy, especially with full shelves and open doors. Secure every one to a wall stud with the included anti-tip kit, and keep heavy items on the lower shelves.
