TV Stand Questions, Answered
Quick answers on sizes, heights, fireplaces and entertainment walls before you choose.
What size TV stand do I need for my TV?
Choose a stand at least as wide as the TV itself, and ideally 2–6 in wider or more. A 65 in TV is about 57 in wide, so look for a stand of 59–63 in or more. A 75 in TV is about 66 in wide (68–72 in or more), and an 85–86 in TV is about 75–76 in wide (78 in or more). The Nacre TV Stand (78.7 in) fits 43–75 in TVs, and the Orbis Streamline Console (86.6 in) suits TVs up to about 85 in. Full chart: TV stand size guide.
How tall should a TV stand be?
The center of the screen should be at about seated eye level, roughly 42–48 in from the floor. For most TVs, that means a stand about 22–30 in tall. Low consoles, like the 19.7 in Orbis, suit large TVs and low sofas. Taller pieces of 30–36 in suit smaller TVs or bedrooms.
What is the difference between a TV stand, a TV console and an entertainment center?
A TV stand is compact and simple. A TV console is long and low, with drawers and cabinets. An entertainment center is a full wall unit with bookcases or cabinets around the TV, sometimes with a fireplace. Read our comparison guide.
Are electric fireplace TV stands safe?
Yes, when used as directed. Nothing burns, so there's no smoke, flame or carbon monoxide. Plug the fireplace directly into a wall outlet (not an extension cord), keep the heat outlet clear, and anchor the unit. Our fireplace entertainment centers offer 12 flame colors and 5 brightness levels. More in the electric fireplace TV stand guide.
Can you put a TV on top of an electric fireplace entertainment center?
Yes, if the unit is designed for it. Check the TV size and weight the mantel supports, and keep the heat outlet away from the TV. The Traditional Entertainment Center fits most TVs up to 50 in on its mantel and has a thermal barrier above the fireplace. The 118 in models have mantels rated for 165 lb. Larger TVs can be wall-mounted above.
How much weight can a TV stand hold?
A common guideline is a top rated for at least 1.5 times the weight of your TV, soundbar and devices. Most 65–75 in TVs weigh about 50–90 lb. Our consoles are rated from 110 lb (Orbis and Nacre) to 176 lb (Relievo Panel TV Console). Always strap the TV to the wall or the stand with an anti-tip kit.
How do I make an entertainment center look built-in?
Center it on the wall with equal gaps on each side, paint the wall to match the cabinets, run cables inside the wall, and light the shelves. Freestanding units like our 118 in White Entertainment Center with 5-Tier Bookcases give the built-in look for far less than custom carpentry. Ideas in built-in entertainment center ideas.
Should a TV stand be wider than the TV?
Ideally, yes. A stand that's wider than the TV looks balanced, is more stable, and gives you space for speakers, a lamp or a plant on each side. At a minimum, it must be wider than the spacing of the TV's feet.
