Shoe Cabinet Questions, Answered
Quick answers on depth, shelf height, capacity and placement before you choose.
How deep should a shoe cabinet be?
For shoes that lie flat, choose shelves 12–14 in deep, which fits most adult shoes (about 9–12.5 in long); allow 13–14 in for large men's sizes and chunky sneakers. Outside depth is usually 1–2 in more. Tilt-out cabinets can be as shallow as 7–11 in because shoes stand at an angle. Both Travero shoe cabinets are 15.7 in deep overall. See how to choose a shoe cabinet.
How tall should shoe cabinet shelves be?
About 3–4 in for sandals and flats, 5–6 in for sneakers and loafers, 6–8 in for high-tops and heels, 8–11 in for ankle boots and 16–20 in for tall boots. The Travero Sensor-Lit has eight 5.9 in shelf levels for everyday shoes, and the Travero Enclosed has four 10.7 in levels for taller pairs.
How many pairs of shoes fit in a shoe cabinet?
Multiply the shelf levels by the pairs per shelf. Plan on about 8–10 in of shelf width per adult pair, so a 30 in shelf holds about 3 pairs. The Sensor-Lit's eight 30.6 in wide shelf levels hold about 24 pairs of everyday adult shoes, and its open base adds a few more. Kids' shoes take less room.
Is a shoe cabinet better than a shoe rack?
A shoe cabinet hides shoes behind doors, keeps dust off and gives you a console top for keys and a lamp, so it suits entryways and living areas. An open shoe rack is lighter, cheaper and lets shoes air out, so it suits closets and mudrooms. Many homes use both: a tray or rack for wet everyday pairs and a cabinet for the rest.
How do you keep a shoe cabinet from smelling?
Let damp shoes dry for a day before you put them away, ideally on an open base or a boot tray. Inside, use cedar blocks, charcoal bags or a dish of baking soda, leave small gaps between pairs, and wipe the shelves every few months. Cabinets with an open base or ventilation gaps stay fresher.
Where should a shoe cabinet go in a small entryway?
As close to the door as you can while keeping about 36 in of clear walkway in front, so doors open and people can pass. Make sure the front door and any closet doors still open fully. In a hallway narrower than about 42 in, a tilt-out cabinet or wall-mounted shelf may fit better. See our entryway ideas.
Can a shoe cabinet be used as a sideboard or console?
Yes. A low, sideboard-height shoe cabinet works as an entryway console, a dining room sideboard or extra storage in a living room. Both Travero cabinets are 63 in wide and 35.4–39.3 in tall, with a top rated for 88 lbs, plus drawers for keys, mail and small items.
Does the motion-sensor light need an outlet?
Yes. The Travero Sensor-Lit's LED strip runs on a plug-in power cord, so place the cabinet within reach of a wall outlet and route the cord behind it. The light turns on when it senses motion, and you can set it to stay on from 10 seconds to 5 minutes.
