Console Table Questions, Answered
Quick answers on height, depth, width and styling before you choose.
What is the standard height of a console table?
Most console tables are 28–32 in tall, and about 30 in is standard. Behind a sofa, choose a table level with the sofa back or 1–2 in lower; entryway tables can go up to about 36 in. Our Relievo Rocaille Entryway Console Table is 31.5 in tall. See the full console table height and dimensions guide.
How deep should a console table be?
Standard console tables are 12–18 in deep, and narrow console tables for hallways are 8–12 in. Deeper tables, 18–24 in, give you room to work or apply makeup but need a wider space. The Relievo Rocaille is 23.6 in deep, so keep about 36 in of walkway in front of it.
How long should a console table be behind a sofa?
About two thirds to three quarters of the sofa's length, and never longer than the sofa. For an 84 in sofa, that's roughly 56–63 in. In an entryway, leave at least 6 in of wall on each side.
What size mirror goes over a console table?
A mirror about two thirds to three quarters of the table's width, hung 6–10 in above the tabletop. For the 47.2 in Relievo Rocaille, that's a mirror about 31–35 in wide. See how high to hang a mirror.
What is the difference between a console table, a sofa table and a sideboard?
A sofa table is a console table sized and placed behind a sofa. A sideboard is deeper, usually 16–22 in, with cabinets and drawers for dining storage, while a console table is slimmer, often on legs with a drawer or shelf. See sideboard vs buffet.
How do you style a console table?
Hang a mirror or one large piece of art centered above it, add a table lamp or tall vase for height, group smaller decor in threes at different heights, and keep a tray for keys. Leave a little empty space between objects, and use baskets or stools underneath.
Can a console table be used as a desk?
Yes, if it is about 28–31 in tall, at least 18 in deep and has open knee space. The Relievo Rocaille has a 47.2 × 23.6 in top rated for 110 lbs and five drawers for stationery and chargers; at 31.5 in tall, pair it with a chair with a 19–21 in seat.
What should I put on an entryway console table?
A lamp for evenings, a bowl or tray for keys and sunglasses, a mirror above, and one or two personal pieces such as a plant, books or a framed photo. Drawers keep mail and small items out of sight; the Relievo Rocaille has five, rated for 17.6 lbs each. See our entryway ideas.
