Kitchen Island Dimensions: Sizes, Clearance and Seating Guide

A kitchen island is the hardest-working piece of furniture in many homes. It's prep space, storage, a breakfast bar and a homework desk. Size it wrong, though, and the kitchen turns into an obstacle course. This guide covers standard kitchen island dimensions, the clearance you need around it, how much seating fits, and how to choose the right size for your kitchen.

Standard Kitchen Island Dimensions

Island size Feet / inches Fits a kitchen about Seating
Small 3 × 5 ft (36 × 60 in) 10 × 12 ft or more 2 stools
Medium 4 × 6 ft (48 × 72 in) 12 × 14 ft or more 2–3 stools
Large 4 × 8 ft (48 × 96 in) 14 × 16 ft or more 3–4 stools
Extra large 4–5 × 9–10 ft Open-plan kitchens 4 or more stools

The minimum useful island is about 24 in deep and 48 in long. Anything smaller works better as a cart. Most islands are 36 in tall, the same as standard kitchen counters. A raised bar section is usually 42 in.

Kitchen Island Clearance

Clearance matters more than the island itself. Kitchen designers commonly follow these guidelines (based on National Kitchen & Bath Association recommendations):

  • 42 in of work aisle between the island and counters for one cook.
  • 48 in for two cooks, or where an oven, dishwasher or fridge door opens into the aisle.
  • 36 in minimum for a walkway with no appliances.
  • Behind seated diners: about 36 in if nobody needs to pass, 44 in to walk behind, and 60 in if it's a main traffic route.

A quick way to check: subtract twice the aisle width (2 × 42 in = 84 in) from the room's width. What's left is the largest island depth that fits.

Seating: Overhang, Width and Height

Counter type Surface height Stool seat height Knee overhang
Table height 30 in 18 in (chairs) 18 in
Counter height 36 in 24–26 in 15 in
Bar height 42 in 28–30 in 12 in
  • Allow 24 in of width per seat (about 28–30 in for wider stools with arms).
  • So a 5 ft island seats 2, a 6 ft island seats 2–3, and an 8 ft island seats 3–4 along one side.
  • Overhangs beyond about 10–12 in usually need support brackets or legs.

Island Sizes by Kitchen

Small kitchens: about 5 ft

The Modern Double-Sided Kitchen Island (61.4 in W × 29.5 in D × 37.4 in H) fits about a 3 × 5 ft footprint. It has drawers and cabinets on one side, seating for two on the other, a 2 in thick top rated for 176 lb, and a built-in charging station (2 outlets, USB and Type-C).

Medium kitchens: about 6.5 ft

The Modern Kitchen Island with Built-In Power Outlet (78.7 in W × 41.9 in D) has a split-level top. The raised bar sits 6.7 in above the prep surface and hides prep mess from guests. Its soft-close cabinets have adjustable shelves.

Large kitchens: about 8 ft and up

How to Measure for a Kitchen Island

  1. Measure the open floor between the counters, or between a counter and a wall.
  2. Subtract 42–48 in on each working side, or 36 in on non-working sides.
  3. Check how far appliance doors swing: dishwasher, oven and fridge.
  4. Decide on seating, and add 24 in of width per stool.
  5. Mark the footprint on the floor with painter's tape and walk around it for a day.

Storage Inside the Island

Islands are great for heavy, low storage: pots and pans, mixing bowls and small appliances. Look for adjustable shelves for tall items, drawers for utensils, and deep cabinets on the working side. Double-sided islands put storage toward the cook and seating toward guests. If you don't need seating at all, see kitchen islands without seating.

FAQ

How big should a kitchen island be?

Big enough to be useful, at least 4 ft long and 2 ft deep, but small enough to leave 42–48 in on working sides. For many kitchens that means 3 × 5 ft to 4 × 8 ft.

How much overhang does a kitchen island need for seating?

About 15 in at counter height (36 in) and 12 in at bar height (42 in), with 24 in of width per seat.

Is 36 inches enough space between a counter and an island?

It's the minimum for a walkway, but tight for cooking. Aim for 42 in, or 48 in if two people cook or appliance doors open into the aisle.

Is a 5 foot kitchen island too small?

Not for a smaller kitchen. A 5 ft island gives useful prep space, storage and two seats. It only looks small in a large open-plan room.

Can a kitchen island be 24 inches wide?

Yes, a 24 in deep island works for prep and storage in narrow kitchens. There just isn't room for a seating overhang. See islands without seating.

What size kitchen island seats four?

About 8 ft (96 in) long for four seats along one side, or a shorter island with seating on two sides.
