How to Clean Upholstered Dining Chairs (and Remove Common Stains)

Upholstered dining chairs are comfortable and beautiful, and they sit right where the spills happen. Pasta sauce, wine, greasy fingers and muddy paws all find them eventually. The good news is that most stains come out if you act quickly and use the right method for the fabric. Here's how to clean upholstered dining chairs, how to tackle common stains, and how to protect them.

Step 1: Check the Cleaning Code

Look for the tag under the seat or in the product details:

Code Meaning
W Water-based cleaners are safe (not the same as machine-washable)
S Solvent-based (dry-cleaning) cleaners only; no water
W/S or SW Either water-based or solvent-based cleaners
X Vacuum or brush only; some makers say professional cleaning only

No tag? Treat the fabric gently and always test in a hidden spot, such as under the seat or at the back.

Step 2: Vacuum

Vacuum the seat, back and seams with a soft brush or upholstery attachment. It lifts crumbs and grit that would otherwise grind into the fabric when you clean. Do this weekly for chairs used every day.

Step 3: Spot Clean

For W or W/S fabrics

  1. Mix a few drops of mild dish soap into a cup of warm water.
  2. Dampen a white microfiber cloth and wring it out well.
  3. Blot from the outside of the stain inward. Don't rub.
  4. Blot with a clean cloth dampened with plain water to remove soap residue.
  5. Blot dry, and let the chair air-dry completely before anyone sits on it.

For S fabrics

Use a solvent-based upholstery cleaner applied to a cloth, not directly to the fabric. Work in a ventilated room and follow the product's directions.

Don't over-wet

Too much water can soak into the foam, leave water rings and encourage mildew. Use the least moisture that works.

How to Remove Common Stains

Stain What to do
Grease and oil Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch, leave 15–30 minutes, vacuum, then spot clean
Red wine Blot immediately with a dry cloth, then with cool water and a drop of dish soap (W fabrics)
Coffee and tea Blot, then spot clean with a mild soap solution
Food and sauce Scrape off solids with a spoon, then spot clean
Water rings Dampen the whole panel evenly and dry it with a hair dryer on cool, to avoid a ring
Blood Cold water only (never hot), blotted gently on W fabrics; call a pro for S or X
Pet hair A lint roller or rubber pet-hair brush

For stubborn stains, an enzyme upholstery cleaner suited to the fabric code can help. Always test first.

Cleaning Velvet Chairs

Velvet needs a lighter touch: vacuum with the pile, blot spills, let it dry, then brush the pile gently. A handheld steamer held a few inches away can lift crushed pile; test first. More in our velvet dining chairs guide.

Deep Cleaning

  • Removable covers: wash according to the care label, usually cold and gentle, and air-dry to prevent shrinking.
  • Upholstery cleaners: a portable upholstery spot cleaner works on W fabrics; avoid soaking.
  • Professional cleaning: cleaning companies typically suggest every 12–24 months, or every 6–12 months with pets, and anytime for S or X fabrics with tough stains.

How to Protect Upholstered Dining Chairs

  • Fabric protector spray: apply in two light coats to clean, dry fabric, and reapply after deep cleaning or about once a year. Test first, and check the fabric's care advice.
  • Clear seat covers or slipcovers for the toddler years.
  • Performance fabrics when you buy, for spill resistance.
  • Blot spills right away. Most stains set within minutes.
  • Keep chairs out of strong direct sun, which fades fabric.
  • Pull chairs out by the back, not the seat; handles like those on our velvet chairs help.
  • Check foot pads occasionally so chairs glide without scratching floors.

FAQ

Can I use dish soap on upholstered chairs?

On W or W/S fabrics, a few drops of mild dish soap in warm water is a common, gentle cleaner. Rinse by blotting with plain water, and test first.

How often should I clean upholstered dining chairs?

Vacuum weekly, spot clean spills immediately and deep clean every 12–24 months (more often with pets).

How do I get water stains out of fabric chairs?

Dampen the whole affected panel evenly with distilled water (if the code allows water) and dry it with cool air so no edge forms.
