An electric fireplace TV stand gives you three things in one piece of furniture: a place for the TV, storage, and the glow of a fire, with no chimney, gas line or renovation. It's one of the easiest ways to add a focal point to a living room without a fireplace. Here's how they work, whether they're safe, what size to choose, and what to look for when buying.
How an Electric Fireplace TV Stand Works
A furniture-style cabinet or entertainment center holds an electric fireplace insert at the center. The insert plugs into a standard wall outlet and creates a flame effect with LEDs. Most models also have a fan-forced heater with one or two power settings. Because nothing burns, there's no smoke, ash or venting.
Heat: How Much Room Will It Warm?
Most electric fireplace inserts top out at 1,500W, about 5,100 BTU per hour. That's usually sold as supplemental heat for a room up to about 400 sq ft, not a replacement for central heating. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, electric resistance heat turns almost all of the electricity it uses into heat in the room. At the 2025 U.S. average residential rate (about 17.3¢/kWh, per the EIA), running at a full 1,500W costs roughly 26¢ an hour. The thermostat cycles the heater on and off, so real costs are usually lower.
The Traditional Entertainment Center with Electric Fireplace has two settings (750W and 1,500W) and a thermostat from 62–82°F.
Are Electric Fireplace TV Stands Safe?
Used as directed, yes. There's no combustion and no carbon monoxide. For safe use:
- Plug the fireplace directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip. Manufacturers' manuals typically call for a dedicated 120V outlet.
- Keep the heat outlet clear of curtains, blankets and furniture.
- Look for overheat protection and a cool-touch front.
- Anchor the unit with the included anti-tip hardware, and strap the TV down too.
Can You Put a TV Above an Electric Fireplace?
With a TV stand designed for it, yes. Look for a stand where the heat vents out the front, low down, and away from the TV. Some units also add a thermal barrier above the insert. On the Traditional Entertainment Center, the thermal barrier blocks heat rising toward the mantel, and the center area fits most TVs up to 50 in. Larger TVs can be wall-mounted above the mantel. The 118 in White Entertainment Center with Fireplace and 5-Tier Bookcases has a mantel top rated for 165 lb. Always follow the manual for TV placement and clearance.
Flame Effects and Year-Round Use
Modern LED flames can be adjusted for color and brightness. Our fireplace entertainment centers offer 12 flame colors and 5 brightness levels by remote. Most electric fireplaces can run the flame without the heat, so you can enjoy the glow in summer and use the heat in winter.
Choosing the Right Size
| Room / wall | Good fit |
|---|---|
| Small living room, 60–70 in of wall | A compact fireplace TV stand with the TV on top |
| Medium room, about 10 ft of wall | An entertainment center about 115 in wide with side bookcases |
| Large room or great room | An entertainment center about 118 in wide with tall bookcases and lighting |
Measure the TV too. For TV-to-stand proportions, see our TV stand size guide.
Storage and Display
Fireplace entertainment centers usually frame the fireplace with bookcases:
- The 118 in White and Walnut models have two 5-tier bookcases with 15.2 in between shelves, built-in LED spotlights, carved details and fluted columns.
- The 115.5 in Traditional model has ten 23.6 in wide shelves, each rated for 44 lb.
Style the shelves with books low, objects at eye level and baskets for media clutter.

FAQ
Do electric fireplace TV stands give off real heat?
Yes. A 1,500W heater gives supplemental heat to a typical living room. It's best for zone heating rather than heating the whole house.
Do electric fireplaces give off toxins?
No. They don't burn fuel, so there's no smoke or carbon monoxide. You may notice a slight smell the first time the heater runs, as the heating element burns off dust.
How high should a TV be above an electric fireplace?
As low as the manufacturer's clearance allows, so the screen stays close to eye level. On a fireplace entertainment center, the TV sits on the mantel or is mounted just above it.
Are fireplace TV stands worth it?
If you want a focal point, supplemental heat and media storage in one piece, without a chimney or renovation, they're very good value.
Do electric fireplaces need ventilation?
They don't need a chimney or gas vent, but they do need clear airflow around the heat outlet.
Can I use the fireplace without the heat on?
Most models let you run the flame effect on its own. Check the manual for your model.
