A dresser that's too deep blocks the walkway, and one that's too small looks lost next to a queen bed. Getting the size right comes down to a few numbers: height, width, depth and clearance. This guide covers standard dresser dimensions, drawer sizes, how big a dresser should be for your bedroom, and how to measure before you buy.
Standard Dresser Dimensions
| Type | Height | Width | Depth | Drawers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small / 3-drawer dresser | 28–34 in | 28–36 in | 16–20 in | 3 |
| Standard 6-drawer double dresser | 30–38 in | about 55–65 in | 16–20 in | 6–8 |
| Triple / 9-drawer dresser | 30–38 in | 65–72 in | 18–20 in | 9 |
| Chest of drawers (tallboy) | 40–55 in | 25–40 in | 16–20 in | 4–6 |
Overall, dressers range from about 30–50 in tall, 30–70 in wide and 16–24 in deep. Most bedroom dressers are 18–20 in deep. Exact sizes vary a lot by style, so always check the listing.
Standard Dresser Height
Most dressers are about 30–38 in tall, roughly waist height. That makes the top easy to use and puts a mirror above it at a comfortable viewing height. Is 30 in too short? Not for a wide, low dresser. It's a common height and makes a room feel open. Chests are taller, usually 44–50 in, so you can reach the top drawer without a step stool. For example, the Curva 8-Drawer Double Dresser is 37.4 in tall, while the Curva 5-Drawer Chest and the Orbis 5-Drawer Curved Chest are 47.2 in tall.
Dresser Width
- Under 36 in: a small dresser or chest for guest rooms, kids' rooms and narrow walls.
- 55–65 in: the standard double dresser, such as the 63 in Curva.
- 65–72 in: triple dressers for shared main bedrooms, such as the 70.8 in Orbis Soft Curve Drawer Dresser.
Should a dresser be wider than the bed?
It doesn't need to be. On the wall facing the bed, a dresser about two-thirds the bed's width looks balanced: about 40 in for a queen (60 in) bed, 50 in or more for a king (76 in). A wide dresser can also go on a side wall, with a chest on another.
Dresser Depth
The normal depth of a bedroom dresser is 18–20 in. Some go up to 24 in, and some slim models are 15–16 in. Depth is what takes space from your walkway, so in tight rooms every inch matters. Don't confuse overall depth with drawer depth: inside, most drawers are about 12–18 in deep.
Drawer Dimensions
Check the inside of the drawers as well as the outside of the dresser:
- Interior height: 4–5 in suits T-shirts, socks and underwear; 6–8 in suits sweaters and jeans.
- Interior width: wide drawers (27 in or more) suit folded stacks side by side.
- Load rating: a full drawer of jeans can weigh 15–20 lb.
For example, Curva drawers are about 27.5 in wide × 13.7 in deep × 4.7 in high, rated for 15 lb, which suits tops and accessories. The Nacre 5-Drawer Chest has 23 in × 14.1 in drawers rated for 40 lb each, and Orbis wide-dresser drawers are rated for 44 lb, which suits heavier clothing.
Clearance and Placement
| Space | Recommended |
|---|---|
| In front of a dresser (to open drawers and stand) | 36 in |
| Between the bed and the dresser | 30–36 in |
| Beside a door or closet | Enough room for both to open fully |
| Above the dresser to a mirror's bottom edge | About 4–8 in |
How to Measure for a Dresser
- Measure the width of the wall, minus any baseboard heat, outlets you need to reach, and window trim.
- Measure the room's depth from that wall to the bed or the walkway, and subtract 36 in for drawer clearance. What's left is your maximum dresser depth.
- Check the height under windows or wall-mounted TVs.
- Measure the delivery route: doorways, stair turns and hallways.
- Mark the footprint on the floor with painter's tape.
Match the Dresser to Your Storage Needs
Estimate what you'll store. As a rough guide, one wide drawer holds about 10–15 folded T-shirts or 6–8 pairs of jeans. One person's folded clothes usually need 5–6 drawers, and a couple needs 8–9. If you're short on floor space, go taller (a chest) instead of wider. See our dresser vs. chest of drawers guide to compare the two shapes.
