Ivory upholstered dining chairs around a light wood table

Dining Chair Size Guide: Seat Height, Width and Spacing

Dining chairs are easy to fall in love with online and surprisingly easy to get wrong at home: seats that sit too low for the table, arms that won't slide under, or one chair too many squeezed around the table. A few measurements prevent all of it. Here's a dining chair size guide: standard chair dimensions, the right seat height for your table, how many chairs fit, and how much space to leave around them.

Standard Dining Chair Dimensions

Measurement Typical range
Seat height about 17–19 in (18 in is common)
Seat width about 16–20 in
Seat depth about 15–18 in (up to about 20 in on deep, lounge-style chairs)
Overall width about 18–22 in (armchairs about 22–26 in)
Overall height about 30–36 in to the top of the back

Upholstered and wraparound chairs tend to run wider and deeper than simple wood chairs, so always check the overall width as well as the seat.

Match the Seat Height to the Table

Leave about 10–12 in between the top of the seat and the top of the table. That gives your thighs room under the table and puts the tabletop at a comfortable height for eating.

Table height Seat height
28–29 in about 16–18 in
30 in (standard) about 18–20 in
31 in about 19–21 in
Counter, 34–36 in about 24–26 in (counter stools)
Bar, 40–42 in about 28–30 in (bar stools)

Our Upholstered Velvet Dining Chair has a 19.3 in seat height, which leaves about 11.8 in under a 31.1 in table like the Wave Edge Solid Wood Dining Table. More on table heights in standard dining table height.

Check the apron and the arms

Measure from the floor to the underside of the table's apron. Your knees, and any chair arms, need to fit below it. If the chairs have arms and the apron is lower than about 25 in, the chairs probably won't slide under.

How Many Chairs Fit Around a Table?

A common planning rule (used by NKBA) is about 24 in of table edge per person. For wider upholstered chairs, armchairs or more formal dinners, plan about 30 in.

Rectangular table length Comfortable seating
48–54 in 4
60–72 in 6
84–96 in 8
108–120 in 10
Round table diameter Comfortable seating
36–44 in 4
48 in 4–6
60 in 6–8
72 in 8–10

Leave about 6 in between chairs so people can get in and out, and check where table legs or a pedestal base sit before planning end seats.

Space Around the Chairs

  • To pull out a chair and sit: at least about 32–36 in from the table edge to the wall or furniture.
  • To squeeze past a seated person: about 36 in.
  • To walk behind seated guests comfortably: about 44 in.

These figures follow NKBA kitchen and dining planning guidelines.

Armchairs vs. Armless Chairs

  • Armless chairs take less space, tuck under the table and suit small rooms.
  • Armchairs are more comfortable for long dinners and work well at the ends of the table as "head chairs".
  • Wraparound or slightly raised arms, like those on our velvet chair, give some of the comfort of an armchair in a smaller footprint.

Seat Depth and Comfort

A seat depth of about 15–18 in suits most adults. Deeper seats are cozy for lingering but can feel deep for shorter people; add a cushion behind you if needed. Our velvet chair has a roomy 18.5 in seat depth with 24D high-resilience foam.

Before You Buy: Checklist

  1. Measure the table height and subtract 10–12 in for the seat height.
  2. Measure the floor-to-apron clearance.
  3. Count chairs at about 24 in of table edge each (more for wide chairs).
  4. Check 36 in or more of clearance behind the chairs.
  5. Check the overall chair width, not just the seat.

Prefer a matched set? Our dining sets pair each table with these chairs, for example the Wave Edge Dining Table Set for 6.
