A closet island is on almost every dream-closet wish list, but it only works if there's room to walk around it and open its drawers. Too big, and the closet feels like a hallway. Here are closet island dimensions, the clearance you need, how big a closet has to be for an island, and what to do if yours is smaller.
Typical Closet Island Dimensions
| Island size | Footprint (D × W) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Compact | about 18–20 × 36–48 in | Narrow walk-ins, a single user |
| Standard | about 24 × 48–60 in | Most walk-in closets |
| Large | about 30–36 × 60–72 in | Dressing rooms and shared closets |
Height: most closet islands are built around counter height, about 36 in, with designs ranging roughly 30–45 in. Counter height is comfortable for folding clothes and laying out outfits.
Two Homsee examples:
- The Jewelry Island with Drawers and Storage is 50 in W × 26.4 in D × 31.5 in H.
- The Pelle Jewelry Island is 59 in W × 23.6 in D × 33.4 in H.
How Much Space Do You Need Around a Closet Island?
Closet designers generally recommend at least 36 in of clear aisle on every side of the island. If two people use the closet at once, aim for about 42 in (Dimensions.com; More Space Place). That space lets you open drawers, step back from hanging clothes and pass someone without turning sideways.
Aisle math
Room width = hanging/storage depth on each wall (about 24 in each) + aisles (36 in each) + island depth.
Example: 24 + 36 + 24 (island) + 36 + 24 = 144 in, or 12 ft, with storage on both long walls.
Also add the drawer pull-out depth. A 12–16 in drawer needs that much free space in front of it, plus room for you to stand.
How Big Does a Walk-In Closet Need to Be for an Island?
Most guidance puts the minimum at about 10 × 10 to 12 × 14 ft, depending on how many walls have storage. With hanging space on two walls, about 10 × 12 ft can work. With storage on all four walls, plan on about 12 × 14 ft (iKitchen; Inspired Closets). Some designers squeeze islands into smaller rooms with narrower aisles, but anything under about 30 in feels tight.
Quick check
- Is a 10 × 10 ft closet too small for an island? Usually borderline. A compact island with storage on two walls might fit.
- Is a 6 × 6 or 8 × 8 ft closet big enough? Not for an island. Use a dresser or drawer unit against a wall instead.
Drawer Sizes Inside the Island
- Shallow drawers (about 3–4 in tall) for jewelry, watches and accessories. The Homsee Jewelry Island's ten drawers are 3.9 in tall, 16.7 in wide and 12.7 in deep inside.
- Deeper drawers or shelves for folded sweaters and T-shirts.
- Load ratings: 22 lb per drawer on the Jewelry Island and 33 lb on the Pelle.
Single-Sided vs. Double-Sided Islands
A single-sided island opens toward one side and can sit closer to a wall on its back. A double-sided island opens from both sides, which is great for couples, but it needs the full aisle on both sides.
Not Enough Space? Alternatives
- A peninsula: the island attached to a wall at one end, so it needs aisles on only three sides.
- A low dresser against the wall with a glass jewelry tray on top.
- A wardrobe with a built-in jewelry drawer, like the Vestia 2-Door Wardrobe Closet with its velvet-lined, glass-top drawer.
- A slim island about 18–20 in deep.
