Pendant Lights Over a Kitchen Island: Height, Spacing and Size

Pendant lights do two jobs over a kitchen island: they light the counter where you chop, serve and do homework, and they set the style of the whole kitchen. Getting them right is mostly about three numbers: how high to hang them, how many you need, and how far apart they go. Here's a simple guide to pendant lights over a kitchen island.

How High to Hang Pendant Lights Over an Island

The common guideline is to hang the bottom of each pendant about 30–36 in above the countertop. With standard 36 in counters and an 8 ft ceiling, that puts the bottom of the pendants about 66–72 in from the floor.

  • Taller ceilings: raise pendants a few inches for each extra foot of ceiling height, staying within view-friendly range.
  • Tall household members: hang them toward the higher end so no one's line of sight is blocked.
  • Bar-height or two-level islands: measure from the higher surface. The Dual-Level Kitchen Island has a raised bar top above the prep surface.

Before you fix the height, have someone hold the pendant in place while you stand at the island and sit on a stool.

How Many Pendants Over a Kitchen Island?

Island length Typical pendant setup
Up to about 4 ft 1 pendant
About 4–7 ft 2 pendants
About 7–9 ft 2 large or 3 medium pendants
10 ft or more 3 pendants, or a linear fixture

Odd numbers are a style preference, not a rule: two larger pendants often look better than three small ones. Larger pendants mean fewer fixtures; small pendants work in threes.

Pendant Spacing Over an Island

  • Space pendants about 24–30 in apart, measured center to center, depending on their size.
  • Keep the outer pendants at least about 6 in, and up to about 12 in, in from the ends of the island, so they light the counter, not the floor.
  • Center them on the island's length and width, not on the ceiling or the room.

Quick spacing method

  1. Measure the island's length.
  2. Subtract about 12–24 in to keep the pendants inside the ends.
  3. Divide the remaining length by the number of pendants plus one, or space them evenly within that span.

Example: a 94.5 in island, like our 6-Door Kitchen Island, suits three medium pendants about 28–30 in apart, or a linear fixture.

What Size Pendants for an Island?

  • Diameter: most island pendants are about 12–18 in across. Two large pendants on a medium island might be 15–18 in each; three on a long island are often 12–14 in. Cut a paper circle and tape it up to check the scale.
  • Coverage: as a rough guide, the pendants should span about half to two-thirds of the island's length, from the outer edge of the first to the outer edge of the last.
  • Visual weight: clear glass and open frames look lighter and can be larger; solid metal or dome shades look heavier.
  • Scale to the room: high ceilings and large open kitchens can take bigger pendants.

Linear Fixtures and Alternatives

A single linear fixture can replace a row of pendants on a long island. Choose one roughly half to two-thirds of the island's length, and hang it at the same height as pendants. On very long islands, such as the 110.2 in Orbis Contour Form Island, a linear fixture or three pendants both work well.

Brightness, Bulbs and Controls

  • Task light: kitchen planning guidelines call for task lighting at every work surface. Pendants over a prep area should be bright enough to work by; pair them with recessed or under-cabinet lighting so the island isn't the only light source.
  • Color temperature: warm to neutral white, about 2700–3000K, suits most kitchens; 3000K bulbs with high color rendering (CRI 90+) are a good all-round choice for an island.
  • Dimmers: bright for cooking, low for dinner and entertaining.
  • Glare: choose shades that hide the bulb from seated guests, or use frosted bulbs.

Kitchen Island Lighting Ideas

  • Oversized paper or rice-paper globes for a soft, relaxed look over a white island.
  • Brass domes over a wood or marble-look island for warmth.
  • Clear glass globes in a small kitchen, to keep sightlines open.
  • Black metal cones for a modern or industrial kitchen.
  • Rattan or woven pendants with light oak and natural textures.
