Tips for buying furniture online, in short: measure the room and the whole delivery path (doors, stairs, elevator, tight turns) against the box sizes, not just the finished piece. Read the full spec block for dimensions, materials, weight capacity, assembly time and number of packages. Check photo reviews, then read the return policy fine print before you order. Most online furniture returns must be unassembled and in the original packaging, and return shipping is often deducted from the refund. Inspect every carton at delivery, photograph any damage right away, and anchor tall pieces to the wall once they are built.
This guide is for anyone shopping for furniture online for the first time, or anyone who has been burned by a dresser that would not fit up the stairs. It walks through what to check before you buy, during checkout and on delivery day, with a printable checklist at the end. Where we use Homsee as an example, every policy fact comes from our published Shipping, Returns and Warranty policies, and every product number comes from the specification block on the product page.
Is It Safe to Buy Furniture Online?
Yes, buying furniture online is safe when you shop on a secure site from a seller that publishes clear policies. Before you enter payment details, check that the website address starts with https and shows the padlock, that the store lists a real company address and phone number, and that shipping, returns and warranty terms are written out in full, not hidden. Research the seller's customer service reputation, make sure the About page is clear and complete, and check the contact page for a phone number. Pay with a credit card or a known payment service rather than a bank transfer, and keep your order confirmation email.
The bigger risk with online furniture shopping is not fraud. It is buying something that does not fit, does not match the photos, or is hard to return. The rest of this guide is about avoiding those three problems.
Buying Furniture Online vs In Store
| Shopping online | Shopping in store | |
|---|---|---|
| Selection | Wider selection; you can compare prices and specs across many listings at once | Limited selection to what the store has on the floor |
| Trying it | You can't sit on it or touch the fabric; you rely on specs, photos and reviews | You can sit, open drawers and feel the finish in person |
| Delivery | Usually flat-packed boxes delivered to your door; you assemble | Often delivered assembled, sometimes for an extra fee |
| Returns | Usually unassembled, in original packaging; return shipping may be deducted | Varies by store; restocking fees are common |
| Prices | Online stores often offer lower prices and promotions, but compare total cost including shipping | You can sometimes negotiate on floor models |
Is it cheaper to buy furniture online or in store? It depends on the piece and the total cost. Compare prices for the same item with delivery, assembly and possible return shipping included, not the sticker price alone. Neither channel is always cheaper.
Step 1: Measure the Room, Then the Delivery Path
Start with the room. Mark the footprint on the floor with painter's tape, and leave walkways of about 30–36 in around beds, tables and sofas, plus room to open drawers and doors. If you're placing a piece against a wall, measure the wall width at floor level and at the height the piece will reach, and note outlets, vents, windows and baseboards. Compare the new piece's size with something you already own, such as a dresser or table of a similar size, or move existing furniture to see how much space it will really take. For more on fitting furniture into tight rooms, see our guide to storage furniture for small apartments.
Then measure the delivery path: every exterior door, hallway, stairway, landing, elevator and interior door between the curb and the room. Most furniture bought online arrives flat-packed, so the number that matters is the largest box, not the finished piece. Compare each box's length, width and height against:
- Door openings: measure the clear width with the door fully open, not the frame.
- Stairs: the ceiling height above the stairs and the width at any turn or landing.
- Elevators: door width, cab depth and the diagonal of the cab for long boxes.
- Tight turns: a long box has to pivot through corners, so measure hallway width at each turn.
Also check box weight. A carton over about 100 lb needs two people, and a dolly helps on long walks from a parking lot.
Example: Reading Box Sizes on a Product Page
The Orbis Rounded Edge Sideboard – Oak measures 86.6 in W × 19.6 in D × 35.4 in H when assembled, but it ships in 2 packages. Package 1 is 93.1 × 24.2 × 8.3 in and weighs 137 lb; package 2 is 38.6 × 21.3 × 12.4 in and weighs 95.2 lb. The long box is the one to check against stair turns and elevator cabs. The Tela Compact Wardrobe is 77.1 in tall assembled and ships in one carton of 83.07 × 27.64 × 6.10 in at 142.75 lb, so it needs two people and a straight run through the door.
Step 2: Read the Full Spec Block, Not Just the Photos
Product photos sell the style; the specification block tells you whether the piece will work in your current home. Before you buy furniture online, read every line:
- Product dimensions in height × width × depth. Check the order the listing uses (many list H × W × D, some W × D × H), and look for a dimension diagram.
- Interior sizes: drawer interior, shelf spacing, hanging height. A wardrobe that is 77 in tall may have far less hanging space.
- Product material and finish: solid wood, plywood, MDF, particle board, veneer, melamine, painted. More on this below.
- Weight capacity for the top, shelves and drawers. The Orbis sideboard above lists 110 lb for the top and 22 lb per drawer and shelf.
- Assembly required or pre-assembled, estimated assembly time and tools. The same sideboard lists 90 minutes with a pencil, hammer and screwdriver.
- Number of packages and package sizes, as in the example above.
- Anti-tip hardware included: important for dressers, wardrobes and bookcases.
- Warranty length, and whether a downloadable manual is available.
If a detail you need is missing, ask the seller before you order. On Homsee product pages the specification block is the reference: if anything in a description seems to disagree with it, ask customer service before buying.
Step 3: Check Materials and Construction Honestly
Quality furniture is about construction, not just the word "wood." Solid wood is the most repairable and usually the most expensive; plywood is strong and stable; MDF stays flat and takes paint well; particle board is the most affordable and the least tolerant of moisture and repeated moves. Much of the furniture sold online, including many Homsee pieces, is engineered wood with a veneer, laminate or painted finish, sometimes combined with solid wood parts. That is fine for many uses as long as the listing says so plainly. Our solid wood vs MDF vs plywood vs particleboard guide compares strength, screw holding, sag and moisture, and how to tell if furniture is good quality covers drawer joints, glides and the checks to run once the piece arrives.
For a sofa or chairs, ask for fabric details (fiber content, rub count if listed) and seat height and depth. For upholstered furniture, frame and spring details matter too; eight-way hand-tied springs are a sign of higher-end construction. Swatches or wood samples are worth ordering when a store offers them, because digital screens can distort colors and textures. Above all, prioritize comfort and function, and think about how the style will match your existing decor.
Step 4: Read Reviews the Right Way
Reviews are your best stand-in for seeing a piece in person. Look for:
- Photo and video reviews in real rooms and real light, which show true color and scale.
- Comments on assembly, packaging and delivery, not just looks.
- Bad reviews and how the seller responded. One damaged delivery is normal; a pattern of the same defect is not.
- Review dates, since products and suppliers change.
You can read Homsee customer ratings, photos and videos on our reviews page and on each product page.
Step 5: Read the Return Policy Fine Print
Furniture return policy terms differ far more than they do for small items, because furniture is heavy and expensive to ship back. Before you order, find out:
- The return window and when it starts (order date or delivery date). Many online stores use 30 days.
- Condition rules: most require the item to be unused, unassembled and in its original packaging. Keep the boxes until you're sure.
- Who pays return shipping, and whether a restocking fee applies.
- Exclusions such as assembled, personalized, custom, open-box or final-sale items. Some retailers don't accept returns on custom orders at all.
- How damaged or defective items are handled, which is usually separate from change-of-mind returns.
For example, Homsee's terms are: you can request a return within 30 days of delivery, and the item must be unused, unassembled, undamaged and in its original packaging. For change-of-mind returns, return shipping fees are deducted from the refund after inspection: $80 per package each way for courier delivery ($160 in total), or $300 per item each way for truck delivery ($600 in total). Items you have already assembled, personalized items, open-box items and items marked non-returnable can't be returned for a change of mind. Damaged or defective items are handled separately. See the full Returns & Refunds Policy.
Can I return a sofa if it's uncomfortable? Usually only as a change-of-mind return, which means within the window, unassembled and in the original packaging, and often with return shipping deducted. That is why it pays to check seat height, depth and fabric before you buy.
Step 6: Check Shipping, Delivery and Lead Times
Delivery details decide when your furniture arrives and how much work it takes to get it inside. Check the service area, the delivery type (to the door, to a room, or with setup), the processing time, the transit time and whether the item is in stock or on pre-order.
Homsee offers free front-door delivery to the 48 contiguous U.S. states and Washington, D.C. In-stock orders usually leave the warehouse within 48 hours and arrive in 1–7 business days, depending on your location. Pre-order items ship on the estimated date shown on the product page. Homsee doesn't currently ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, PO Boxes or APO/FPO/DPO addresses. Front-door delivery means the boxes are left at your door, so plan help for carrying them inside. Details are in the Shipping Policy.
In Stock vs Pre-Order
An in-stock item ships from current inventory. A pre-order item is sold before it arrives at the warehouse and ships on an estimated date. Pre-order can be worth the wait for a specific piece, but check the date against your move-in or event, and remember that a long lead time is a few weeks of waiting, not a few days.
Step 7: Price, Price Match and Payment
To compare prices fairly, line up the same product (same size, color and model) and add shipping, any assembly fee and the cost of a possible return. Promotions are common, so check whether the store offers a price adjustment if the price drops after you buy; some stores will also share a promo code if you ask through online chat.
Homsee offers a 30-day online price match: if you buy on homsee.com and find the identical Homsee product at a lower price on homsee.com or in an official Homsee store on another online platform within 30 days of purchase, Homsee refunds the difference. The details are in the Returns & Refunds Policy.
At checkout, use a secure payment method. Homsee accepts installment payment services such as Afterpay, Klarna and Affirm (see financing options), and optional shipping protection can be added at checkout to cover eligible loss or damage in transit.
Step 8: Inspect Everything on Delivery Day
Delivery day is when a damage claim is won or lost. Before you open anything:
- Count the cartons against your order confirmation. Large orders often arrive in several shipments, and each package may have its own tracking number.
- Check every carton for crushed corners, punctures or water damage, and photograph any damage before moving the box.
- If a delivery driver asks you to sign, write any damage on the proof-of-delivery form before the driver leaves.
- Unpack one box at a time and check the parts against the parts list in the manual.
- Keep all original packaging until everything is assembled and you're happy with it.
If something arrives damaged or defective, contact the seller right away with photos of the whole package, the damaged area, the item and the shipping labels. At Homsee, email customer@homsee.com; the product FAQ asks you to report damage within 14 days of delivery. Missing or broken hardware can also be requested through the parts replacement service.
Step 9: Assemble, Anchor and Register the Warranty
Most furniture bought online needs assembly. Read the whole manual before you start, sort the hardware, assemble on a rug or the flattened cartons, and hand-tighten cam locks and screws rather than over-driving them with a drill. Our flat-pack assembly guide covers tools, time and common mistakes, and Homsee manuals are on each product page and in the Assembly Center.
Anchor every dresser, chest, wardrobe, bookcase and tall cabinet to the wall, especially in homes with children. Some pieces include anti-tip hardware (the 6-Door Wardrobe Armoire – White lists it in its spec); if yours doesn't, buy a kit. See how to anchor furniture to the wall.
Finally, keep your order confirmation for the warranty. Homsee furniture bought on homsee.com has a 2-year limited warranty covering materials and manufacturing defects, structural frame parts, workmanship and non-lighting electronic components. Fabrics, seat cushions, leather covers and LED lighting are covered for 1 year. The warranty applies to the original purchaser and doesn't cover misuse, accidents, improper installation or normal wear. To file a claim, email customer@homsee.com with your order confirmation and photos. See the Warranty Policy.

FAQ
What should I check before buying furniture online?
Check the dimensions against your room, the box sizes against your doors, stairs and elevator, the full spec (material, weight capacity, assembly time, number of packages), photo reviews, the return policy, the shipping terms and whether the item is in stock or on pre-order.
How do I measure for furniture delivery?
Measure the clear width of every door with the door open, the width of hallways at each turn, the height above stairs, the width at landings and the elevator door and cab. Compare those numbers with the largest box size on the product page, not just the assembled size.
Is it better to buy furniture online or in store?
Buying furniture online gives you a wider selection and makes it easier to compare prices and specs; shopping in store lets you sit, touch and test. Many people combine both: they try a style in person, then compare specs, reviews and total cost online.
Can I return furniture I bought online?
Usually yes, within the return window and if the item is unused, unassembled and in its original packaging. Return shipping is often deducted. At Homsee, returns can be requested within 30 days of delivery, and return shipping fees are deducted after inspection as listed in the policy.
What is the 2/3 rule for furniture?
It's a proportion guideline: a coffee table should be about two-thirds the length of the sofa, and a sideboard or console about two-thirds the length of the wall or table it sits beside. See our coffee table size guide for examples.
What comes first: length, width or height?
There's no single standard. Many furniture listings use height × width × depth, while others use width × depth × height, and box sizes are usually length × width × height. Read the labels in the listing or the dimension diagram instead of assuming the order.
What if my furniture arrives damaged?
Photograph the carton and the damage before moving anything, note the damage on any delivery form, keep all packaging, and contact the seller right away with photos of the package, the item and the shipping labels. Homsee handles damaged or defective items separately from change-of-mind returns.
Does Homsee charge for shipping?
No. Homsee offers free front-door delivery to the 48 contiguous U.S. states and Washington, D.C. In-stock orders usually leave the warehouse within 48 hours and arrive in 1–7 business days; pre-order items ship on the estimated date shown on the product page.
