Coffee Table Size Guide: Length, Height and Spacing Rules

Coffee Table Size Guide: Length, Height and Spacing Rules

Coffee table size in short: a coffee table should be about two-thirds the length of your sofa, 16–18 in tall (level with the sofa seat or 1–2 in lower), and placed 14–18 in from the sofa's front edge. Standard coffee table dimensions are about 36–54 in long and 18–30 in deep for rectangular tables, and 30–48 in across for round and square tables. Leave 30–36 in of walking space around the seating area. The most common size is about 48 in long and 24 in wide.

A coffee table that is too big blocks the walkway and makes a room feel crowded; one that is too small looks lost and leaves you stretching for your drink. This guide covers the right coffee table size for your sofa or sectional, the height rule, how much space to leave, how shape changes the measurements, and what fits a small living room. The Homsee examples come from the dimensions on each product page.

Standard Coffee Table Dimensions

Shape Typical size Height Best with
Rectangular 36–54 in long × 18–30 in deep 16–18 in Standard 3-seat sofas
Oval 36–54 in long × 20–30 in deep 16–18 in Sofas in tight rooms
Square 30–48 in per side 16–18 in Sectionals, loveseats, chair groups
Round 30–48 in diameter 16–18 in Small rooms, curved sofas, sectionals
Large sectional table 48–60 in long or square 16–18 in Large L- and U-shaped sectionals

Overall, coffee tables range from about 36 to 72 in long and 14–20 in tall, and very low designs go down to 10–12 in. By room size, a compact room suits a 30–36 in round table, a medium living room a table 36–48 in long and 20–28 in deep, and a large living room a table 48–60 in long or more.

The Two-Thirds Rule: Coffee Table Length

The most useful rule of thumb is that the coffee table length should be about two thirds the length of the sofa. That leaves room at each end to walk around and reach the table from every seat, and it keeps the proportions balanced.

Sofa length Coffee table length (about 2/3)
60 in (loveseat) 36–40 in
72 in (6 ft) 44–48 in
84 in (7 ft) 52–56 in
90 in about 60 in
96 in (8 ft) 60–64 in

So what size coffee table for a 72 in sofa? About 48 in long. For a 7 ft sofa, look for 52–56 in. Treat the rule as a range, not an exact number: a table between half and two-thirds of the sofa length looks right in most rooms, and a slightly shorter table is fine if the walkway is tight.

Is 36 Inches Big Enough?

A coffee table of 36 inches suits a loveseat, a sofa up to about 60 in, a small sectional or a compact room. In front of a standard 84 in sofa it looks small, so go longer or add a pair of side tables.

Width (depth) matters too. Most rectangular coffee tables are 20–28 in deep, which keeps the far edge within reach. A deeper table, 30 in or more, gives more surface area for trays and games but works best in front of a deep sofa or a sectional.

Coffee Table Height: The Height Rule

Standard coffee table height is 16–18 in. The height rule is simple: the table should be level with the sofa seat height or 1–2 in lower. Most sofa seats are 17–19 in off the floor, so a 16–18 in table lets you set down drinks without leaning, and keeps sightlines open across the room.

  • Low, deep sofas (16–17 in seats): choose a lower table, about 14–16 in.
  • Standard sofas (17–19 in seats): 16–18 in is the standard.
  • Plush or tall sofas (19–21 in seats): a slightly taller table, 18–20 in, works well.

Is 20 in too high for a coffee table? Not if your sofa seat is about 20 in. Is 24 in too high? Yes for most living rooms; 24 in is side table height. If you mostly eat, work or play games at the coffee table, a slightly taller table or a lift-top design can feel more comfortable.

How Much Space to Leave Around a Coffee Table

Space Distance
Sofa front edge to coffee table 14–18 in (16–18 in ideal)
Chairs to coffee table 14–18 in
Walking space around the seating area 30–36 in
Coffee table to TV stand at least 30 in

The distance between sofa and coffee table should be 14–18 in: close enough to grab a drink or rest your feet from the closest couch seat, far enough that your knees and shins don't hit the edge. If people often walk between the sofa and the table, go to the upper end. In a tight room, 24 in is the absolute minimum walkway around the table. On a rug, keep the coffee table on the rug and at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs on it too.

Coffee Table Size for a Sectional

A sectional changes the measurement: instead of the sofa length, measure the inside of the L. A square or round coffee table usually suits a sectional best, because every seat is about the same distance from the table.

  • Small sectional or loveseat with chaise: a 30–40 in square or round table.
  • Medium L-shaped sectional: a 36–48 in square table, or a rectangular table about two-thirds the length of the longer side.
  • Large or U-shaped sectional: a 48–60 in square or rectangular table, or two smaller tables side by side.

Center the table on the inside corner of the L and keep 14–18 in from each seat. With a chaise, don't push the table into the chaise; leave room to swing your legs off it.

Round, Square or Rectangular?

Shape changes how a given size feels in the room:

  • Rectangular tables follow the line of a standard sofa and give the most surface for their footprint.
  • Square tables suit sectionals and seating groups with chairs on three or four sides.
  • Round and oval tables have no corners, so they ease traffic in small rooms and families with young kids.

For a detailed comparison, see round vs square coffee tables.

Coffee Tables for Small Living Rooms

In a small living room, the right coffee table size is often smaller than the two-thirds rule suggests, because walking space matters more. Choose a 30–40 in round or oval table, or a narrow rectangular table about 18–20 in deep. Materials change the visual weight too: glass tops, open shelves and slim metal or wood legs look lighter than a solid block, so they sit more easily beside other furniture pieces. Nesting tables or a pair of small tables let you pull a surface closer when you need it and move it away when you don't. An upholstered coffee table that doubles as an ottoman saves buying another piece of furniture.

How to Measure for a Coffee Table

  1. Measure the sofa length (arm to arm) and multiply by two-thirds for the target table length.
  2. Measure the sofa seat height and choose a table 0–2 in lower.
  3. Measure from the sofa's front edge to the next piece of furniture, such as the TV stand. Subtract 14–18 in on the sofa side and about 30 in on the far side if people walk there: what remains is your maximum table depth.
  4. Check the walking space: keep 30–36 in clear around the seating area.
  5. Mark the table outline on the floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day before you buy.

FAQ

What is the standard size of a coffee table?

About 36–54 in long, 18–30 in deep and 16–18 in tall for a rectangular coffee table. Round and square coffee tables are usually 30–48 in across.

What is the 2/3 rule for coffee tables?

Choose a coffee table about two-thirds the length of your sofa: about 48 in for a 72 in sofa and 56 in for an 84 in sofa.

What size coffee table for a 72 in sofa?

About 44–48 in long and 20–26 in deep, placed 14–18 in from the sofa.

Is a 40 inch coffee table too small?

Not for a loveseat, a sofa of about 60–70 in, a small sectional or a small room. In front of an 84 in sofa it can look small; aim for 52–56 in there, or add two side tables.

How far should a coffee table be from the sofa?

14–18 in from the sofa's front edge. That is close enough to reach a drink and far enough to walk past and move your legs.

What kind of coffee table goes with a sectional?

A square or round table is usually best: 36–48 in for a medium L-shaped sectional and 48–60 in, or two tables, for a large sectional.

Is 20 inches too high for a coffee table?

Only if your sofa is low. A 20 in coffee table suits sofas with seats of about 20 in; with standard 17–19 in seats, 16–18 in is more comfortable. 24 in is side table height.

How do I know if a coffee table is too big?

If there is less than 14 in between it and the sofa, less than 30 in of walking space around the seating area, or it is longer than the sofa's seat cushions, it is too big for the room.
