Standard wardrobe dimensions: a freestanding single wardrobe is 24–36 in wide (most often 30–32 in), a double or 4-door wardrobe 36–63 in, and a triple wardrobe 54–72 in. Most are 20–25 in deep and 72–90 in tall; with top cabinets, wardrobe sets reach about 102 in. Depth matters most: hangers need about 22–24 in of interior depth to hang properly without catching on the doors.
If you are furnishing a bedroom, a guest room or an apartment without a closet, understanding standard wardrobe dimensions makes it much easier to pick the right wardrobe for your room and storage requirements. This guide breaks down every number you need before you order a new wardrobe: width, depth, height, hanging space, door clearance and the ceiling height each size needs. Every Homsee example below comes from the product's own Specification, so you can compare like for like. For the full buying checklist, see how to choose a wardrobe.

These standard wardrobe sizes apply to freestanding wardrobes sold in the US; a double wardrobe or triple wardrobes simply repeat the same depth and height across more width. Built in wardrobes are made to fit an alcove, so their width follows the wall, but the depth and hanging-space rules below still apply to every wardrobe size.
Wardrobe Width: Single, Double and Triple Wardrobes
Width decides how much hanging rail you get. Use the wall you have, then work back from what you own:
- Single wardrobe, 24–36 in (most often 30–32 in): one person's everyday clothes, or the perfect wardrobe for guest rooms and smaller bedrooms. The Tela Core and Tela Compact are both 31.5 in wide.
- Double wardrobe, 36–63 in: the usual choice for master bedrooms and shared wardrobes. The Tela Lumi is 63 in wide; the Vestia 4-Door Wardrobe Closet is 59.1 in.
- Triple wardrobes, 54–72 in: three doors split the width into a hanging section plus shelves or drawers on one side. The Vestia 3-Door is 58.6 in wide.
- Full-wall systems, 94–158 in: several modules side by side for larger bedrooms or a closet-free room.
Door width: most wardrobe doors are roughly 15–20 in wide, so a 31.5 in single wardrobe has two doors of about 15.75 in. Narrower doors need less swing space, which is why 4-door wardrobes suit tighter rooms better than 2-door wardrobes of the same width.
To check you have enough space, a common rule of thumb is about 3–4 ft of hanging rail per adult. If most of your clothing is folded clothes rather than long garments, a narrower wardrobe plus a dresser can work better than a wider wardrobe.
Wardrobe Depth: Why 24 Inches Is the Standard
How deep should a wardrobe be? The ideal depth for a wardrobe with a front-to-back hanging rod is 22–24 in inside, which usually means 23–25 in outside. Standard hangers are about 17–19 in wide, and clothes need a little room on each side so they hang properly and the doors still close.
- Tela wardrobes: 23.6 in deep outside, 22.2 in inside.
- Vestia wardrobe closets: 24.8–25 in deep.
- Armoires: often shallower. The 6-Door Wardrobe Armoire is 19.7 in deep, so check how its rod and shelves are arranged on the product page before planning it for bulky coats.
Is 2 ft deep enough? Yes. 24 inches is the standard depth for hanging clothes. Below about 20 in, plan on a front-facing pull-out rod, hooks or open shelves instead of a full hanging rail.
Shelf depth for folded clothes can be shallower than hanging space: the drawers inside Tela wardrobes are 16.3 in deep. Sliding wardrobes are often a little deeper than hinged ones, because the door track sits in front of the hanging space.
Wardrobe Height and Ceiling Height
A standard wardrobe is 72–90 in tall; most freestanding models are 75–80 in. Top cabinets add 15–24 in and turn the vertical space above into storage for bulky items and seasonal items such as spare bedding.
| Wardrobe height | Homsee examples | Ceiling height needed |
|---|---|---|
| 73–79 in | Tela base wardrobes (77.1 in), Orbis Curved Edge (73.2 in), 6-Door Armoire (78.7 in) | Any standard 8 ft (96 in) ceiling |
| 92.8–92.9 in | Tela Classic sets, Orbis Solen Classic | Fits under an 8 ft ceiling with about 3 in to spare |
| 100.7–101.5 in | Tela Grand sets, Orbis Solen Grand, Vestia wardrobe closets | Taller than an 8 ft ceiling: plan for 9 ft (108 in) |
Measure the ceiling height in several spots, and watch for crown molding, a ceiling light or a vent where the wardrobe will stand. Wardrobes for children's rooms are often shorter, so kids can reach the rod themselves. Tall wardrobes are top-heavy, so anchor every wardrobe to a wall stud with an anti-tip kit, especially in a child's room.
Hanging Space: How Much Height Do Your Clothes Need?
The hanging rod height inside the wardrobe decides what you can store without hems touching the floor of the cabinet. As a guide, short hanging (shirts, jackets, folded trousers) needs 36–42 in of drop, and long garments such as dresses and long coats need 60–66 in. Shelves for folded clothes are usually spaced 10–14 in apart, and interior drawers are 4–8 in tall; Tela drawers are 5.9 in tall, and larger Tela systems add an 8.8 in drawer.
| Wardrobe | Hanging space height | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Vestia 3-Door Wardrobe Closet | 64.2 in | Long garments: maxi dresses, long coats |
| Tela (long section on Lumi and full-wall systems) | 54.6 in | Midi dresses, overcoats |
| Orbis Curved Edge Wardrobe | 46 in and 52.2 in | Mixed hanging clothes |
| Vestia 4-Door Wardrobe Closet | 51.4 in | Jackets, shirts, dresses |
| Tela standard sections | 46.4 in | Shirts, jackets, folded trousers |
| Vestia 2-Door with 3 Drawers | 42.6 in | Shirts and short jackets |
Plan a combination of short and long hanging space, then use shelves and drawers for the rest. Our guide on how to organize a wardrobe shows how to zone hanging rails, shelving and shoe racks by height.
Space for Shoes, Accessories and Folded Clothing
Not all storage is hanging storage. Shoes need a lower compartment or shelf about 12–14 in deep, and boots need more height. Accessories fit best in shallow drawers: the divided jewelry tray in Tela systems measures 28.6 × 16.3 × 5.9 in. For folded clothing, sweaters and bulky items, shelves of 12–16 in deep are enough, so a wardrobe with both hanging space and shelving covers the most storage in the least space.
Clearance: Wardrobe Doors, Drawers and Walkways
The wardrobe needs enough space in front of it as well as against the wall:
- Hinged doors: each door panel swings out about its own width. Leave 30–36 in of clear floor in front so you can open the doors and step back. Homsee wardrobes use hinged doors, which give full access to the interior at once.
- Sliding doors: a sliding door wardrobe needs no swing space, which suits narrow rooms, but you reach only one side at a time. Compare hinged doors and sliding doors before you decide.
- Drawers: allow the full drawer depth (about 16 in) plus room to stand.
- Bed to wardrobe: keep a 30–36 in walkway so the doors clear the bed.
Sliding Door Wardrobe Dimensions
Sliding wardrobes follow the same 24 inches of hanging depth, plus a few inches for the track, so they usually run 24–28 in deep overall. Each sliding door panel overlaps the next, so a two-door sliding wardrobe opens only half its width at a time. That trade-off is practical in smaller rooms and narrow hallways where hinged wardrobe doors would hit the bed. All Homsee wardrobes use hinged doors; if your room has less than 30 in in front of the wall, choose narrower doors, such as a 4-door model, rather than a 2-door model of the same width.
Corner, Full-Wall and Walk-In Wardrobe Dimensions
- Corner wardrobe: the Vestia Corner Wardrobe Closet Cabinet needs a 39.3 × 39.3 in corner and stands 101.5 in tall. It turns a dead corner into hanging space.
- Full-wall wardrobe: the Tela Full Wall Wardrobe System covers 157.5 in (just over 13 ft) at 77.1 in tall; the Tela Classic Complete Wall is 157.7 in wide and 92.8 in tall. It is a cost effective alternative to built in wardrobes.
- Walk in wardrobes: the Vestia Modular Walk-In Closet System spans 166.1 × 95.2 in and 101.5 in tall. A walk-in layout needs at least about 5 × 6 ft of clear floor, with room to walk between facing units. See walk-in closet ideas for layouts.
How to Measure for a New Wardrobe
- Measure the wall width at floor level and at the height of the wardrobe top. Baseboards can push a wardrobe about 0.5–1 in away from the wall, so subtract that from the depth you have.
- Measure the ceiling height where the wardrobe will stand, and note crown molding, vents and light fixtures.
- Check the swing zone: 30–36 in of clear floor for hinged doors, and no outlets or light switches hidden behind the cabinet.
- Measure the delivery path: doorways, hallways and stairs. Flat-pack wardrobe boxes are long: those for the Tela Full Wall Wardrobe System run about 80–85 in, so measure turns on the stairs.
- Plan the anchor point: find a wall stud for the anti-tip kit before you place the wardrobe.

FAQ
What is the standard size of a wardrobe?
A standard single wardrobe is 24–36 in wide (most often 30–32 in), 20–25 in deep and 72–80 in tall. A double wardrobe is 36–63 in wide and a triple wardrobe 54–72 in, with the same depth. Wardrobe sets with top cabinets are 90–102 in tall.
What is the standard depth of a wardrobe?
About 24 inches; the usual range is 20–24 in for hinged wardrobes and 24–28 in for sliding wardrobes. A wardrobe needs 22–24 in of interior depth for hangers to hang front to back. Tela wardrobes are 23.6 in deep outside and 22.2 in inside; Vestia wardrobe closets are 24.8–25 in deep.
What is the maximum height for a wardrobe?
It depends on the ceiling. Under a standard 8 ft (96 in) ceiling, wardrobes up to about 93 in fit with room to spare. Wardrobes of 100–102 in need a 9 ft ceiling.
What is the standard width of a wardrobe door?
Most wardrobe doors are about 15–20 in wide. A 31.5 in single wardrobe has two doors of about 15.75 in each.
What is the 70/30 rule for a wardrobe?
It is a styling rule about clothes, not furniture size: build about 70% of your wardrobe from versatile basics and 30% from statement pieces. Some people also use it to mean keeping a wardrobe only about 70% full so clothes have room to breathe, which is a good reason to size up slightly.
What is the difference between an armoire and a wardrobe?
An armoire is usually a traditional, decorative cabinet with shelves and drawers, and is often shallower. A wardrobe is a closet-like cabinet built around hanging space. Read more in wardrobe vs. armoire.
