How to choose a dining set: pick the set size by the people you seat every day. A 5-piece dining set is a table and 4 chairs, a 7-piece set is a table and 6 chairs, and a 9-piece set is a table and 8 chairs. Then check that the room leaves at least 36 in (91 cm) of clearance on every side of the table, that the table allows about 24 in of length per person, and that the chair seat sits 10–12 in below the tabletop.
A dining set is the centerpiece of your dining room furniture, and it saves you from having to coordinate a table and dining chairs yourself. But the piece count is only the start. This guide compares 5-piece vs 7-piece vs 9-piece dining sets: who each one seats, the size table each needs, how much dining room space to plan, how chair width and seat height should match the table, round vs rectangular shapes, and when separates make more sense. Every Homsee example uses the dimensions on its product page.
5-Piece vs 7-Piece vs 9-Piece Dining Sets at a Glance
| Set size | What's included | Seats | Typical table size | Room size (36 in clearance) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5-piece | Table + 4 chairs | 4 | 36–48 in round or square; 48–72 in rectangle | About 10 × 10 ft (round) to 12 × 9 ft |
| 7-piece | Table + 6 chairs | 6 | 60–84 in rectangle or oval; 54–60 in round | About 11 × 9 ft to 13 × 9 ft |
| 9-piece | Table + 8 chairs | 8 | 78–96 in rectangle; 60–72 in round | About 13 × 9 ft to 14 × 9.5 ft |
The piece count always includes the table, so subtract one to get the number of chairs. Some stores also sell 3-piece sets (a table and 2 chairs) for couples and kitchen nooks, and 6-piece sets that swap two chairs for a bench.
What Each Set Size Seats
5-Piece Dining Set: Seats 4
A 5-piece dining set suits couples, small families and apartments, and it is the usual choice for a dining set for small space or an eat-in kitchen. Four chairs fit around a 36–48 in round or square table, or along a 48–72 in rectangle. Many tables in 5-piece sets are longer than they need to be for four, which is useful: you can add extra seats for guests later without buying a new table.
7-Piece Dining Set: Seats 6
A 7-piece dining set is the most common dining room set for 6 and fits a family of four or five that hosts now and then, or six people enjoying a long dinner. Six chairs need a rectangle or oval of at least 60 in, and 72–84 in is more comfortable, with two or three chairs on each long side and one at each head of the table. A 54–60 in round table also seats six.
9-Piece Dining Set: Seats 8
A 9-piece dining set seats eight and is built for large families and regular hosting. Most tables for six to eight people are at least 78 in long, and 84–96 in leaves enough elbow room for three chairs on each side plus one at each end. Check the room first: a 9-piece set needs the most floor space and the widest walkway.
Room Size: The 36-Inch Clearance Rule
Plan at least 36 in (3 ft) of clear floor between the table edge and the wall or any other furniture on every side. That is the space people need to pull a chair out and sit down. Allow 42–48 in where people pass behind seated diners, and measure from the front of a sideboard or buffet, not from the wall. To work out the room size, add 72 in to the table length and 72 in to its width:
| Table size | Minimum room size |
|---|---|
| 48 in round | 120 × 120 in (10 × 10 ft) |
| 70.9 × 27.5 in | 143 × 100 in (about 11.9 × 8.3 ft) |
| 70.9 × 29.5 in | 143 × 102 in (about 11.9 × 8.5 ft) |
| 83.8 × 35.4 in | 156 × 107 in (about 13 × 9 ft) |
| 83.8 × 39.3 in | 156 × 111 in (about 13 × 9.3 ft) |
| 90.5 × 39.9 in | 163 × 112 in (about 13.5 × 9.3 ft) |
Before you order, measure the room and the furniture that stays, then mark the table outline on the floor with painter's tape and pull a chair out on each side. In a small room, you can push one long side of the table against a wall or banquette and keep 36 in on the open sides. For more table shapes and sizes, see our dining table size guide.
Table Size per Set: Plan 24 Inches per Person
Give each diner about 24 in of table length, and 24–30 in if the chairs are wide or you serve family-style meals. That is why a 72 in table seats six comfortably and an 84 in table seats eight: three place settings on each long side plus one at each end. For width, standard dining tables are typically 36–40 in wide, enough for place settings on both sides and a serving dish down the middle. A narrower 27–30 in top saves floor space in a galley dining area but leaves less room for shared dishes.
If your table count changes through the year, an extendable table with removable leaves can add 2–4 extra seats. Compare the table's "seats up to" figure with the number of chairs in the set: when the table seats more, you can add matching chairs later.
Chair Width and Seat Height: How Chairs Should Match the Table
| Measurement | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Dining table height | 28–31 in from the floor to the top |
| Chair seat height | 17–20 in (18 in is standard) |
| Seat to tabletop | 10–12 in for comfortable legroom |
| Chair width | 16–20 in typical; 22 in or more for roomy upholstered chairs |
| Space per diner | 24–30 in of table length |
Most adults need about 12 in between the chair seat and the tabletop, measured to the top. Check the underside of the table or apron as well: it should still clear your thighs. Wide chairs are comfortable but take more table length, so count them against the 24–30 in per seat rule before you decide on a set. Armless chairs tuck in closer and suit round or square tables, where curved edges leave less room between seats. If you can, test a chair at a table of the same height in a store, or compare both heights on the product pages. Upholstered dining chairs add comfort for long meals, but the fabric and foam filling need regular vacuuming and spot cleaning.
Homsee dining sets come with the same Upholstered Velvet Dining Chair: 34.5 in high, 22.5 in wide and 25.5 in deep, with a 19.3 in seat height, an 18.5 in deep cushioned seat and a 250 lb seat weight capacity. On a 31.1 in table that leaves about 11.8 in between the seat and the tabletop; on a 30.3 in table, about 11 in. The chair is also sold separately in sets of 2, 4, 6 or 8, so the chairs you add later match exactly. For more on table heights, see standard dining table height.
Round vs Rectangular Dining Sets
- Round: round tables fit snugly in small spaces and square rooms, give everyone a great view of each other for conversation and have no corners to bump. They work best for 4–6 people; past 60 in, the middle of the table gets hard to reach.
- Square tables: square tables suit boxy spaces and seat four, one per side; larger 60 in squares seat eight but make the center hard to reach.
- Rectangular: rectangular tables are ideal for large dining rooms and long or narrow rooms, seat 6–10, and make it easy to add extra seats at the ends.
- Oval and rounded-end: oval tables combine the length of a rectangle with softer corners, so they allow easy maneuvering and extra seating in busy walkways.
Whatever the shape, match the style elements, such as wood tone, leg shape and fabric color, to the rest of the dining room. All current Homsee dining sets use long tops: rectangles with softened edges, rounded-rectangle tops and oval-end tables. The set called "Round Pedestal" is named for its two fluted column bases; its top is a 90.5 in rounded rectangle. If you are still deciding on shape, see round vs rectangular dining tables.
Buying a Dining Set vs Table and Chairs Separately
A dining set is designed as a match: the chair seat height, the table height and the style already work together, and you choose everything in one click. That makes it an easy way to create a coordinated look in a new dining room or kitchen without searching a large selection of tables and chairs. Buying separates gives you more freedom: a chair style or color that contrasts with the table, a bench on one side, or a different number of chairs than any set offers. Separates are also worth a look if you already own a table you loved and only need new dining chairs.
Price depends on the item, so compare the set price with the table plus the same chairs bought separately before you decide. Also compare the details that are easy to miss: the number of chairs, the tabletop weight capacity, the materials, how many boxes it ships in and the assembly time. Homsee dining sets ship in 3 boxes (5-piece), 4 boxes (7-piece) or 5 boxes (9-piece), one for the table plus two chairs per box, and boxes may arrive separately. Estimated assembly time is about 45 minutes for most sets and 60 minutes for a few. Delivery to the front door is free in the 48 contiguous US states and DC; orders leave the warehouse within 48 hours, and transit takes 1–7 business days.

FAQ
What is the difference between a 5-piece, 7-piece and 9-piece dining set?
The number of chairs. A 5-piece dining set is a table and 4 chairs, a 7-piece set is a table and 6 chairs, and a 9-piece set is a table and 8 chairs.
How much space do you need for a 7-piece dining set?
Add 36 in on every side of the table. A 72 × 36 in table needs a room of about 12 × 9 ft, and an 84 × 36–40 in table needs about 13 × 9–9.3 ft.
What size table do you need for a 9-piece dining set?
At least 78 in long for eight people, and 84–96 in is more comfortable. A round table for eight needs to be about 60–72 in across.
What size dining set is best for a small space?
A 5-piece set with a 36–48 in round table, or a narrow rectangle of about 27–30 in wide. Push one side against a wall or banquette if you need more walking room.
What size is a 4-seater dining table?
About 36–48 in round or square, or 48 in long or more if rectangular, and about 30–36 in wide.
How much space should be between a dining chair and the table?
About 10–12 in from the chair seat to the tabletop. With a standard 18 in seat, that means a 28–30 in table.
Is it better to buy a dining set or separate pieces?
A set guarantees that the chairs and table match in height and style; separates let you mix chair styles, colors and seat counts. Compare the set price with the table and chairs bought separately.
